9 Things To Consider Before Job Searching While Employed Employees leave companies for a  variety of reasons. Perhaps they butt-heads with their immediate supervisor, or maybe the company is in a constant state of reorganization. Whatever your reasons are for leaving, job searching while employed requires secret agent-like discretion and stealth. How can employed white-collar workers channel James Bond or Jason Bourne in the job search? Consider the following covert moves: 1. Keep Your Job Search And Work Separate It’s sometimes OK to search for new jobs at work if your employer is actively downsizing, and you’ve been told your job isn’t secure and you’re welcome to use the company time for your search. For all other times, keep your job search and work separate. Never search for jobs using your company’s computer, and never use your work email to touch base with potential employers. Just as they do for social media usage, many employers monitor computers and email. Likewise, don’t use company resources to print resumes or work samples, and don’t use the shared company mailroom to send direct mail to potential employers. Still feel like searching for a job while on the clock? Here’s what to say if you’ve been  caught red-handed. 2. Be Very Careful Who You Tell Just because you trust your cubicle partner not to steal your stapler, doesn’t mean you should trust her to keep mum about your future career prospects. Keep your job leads and interviews as private as possible while still harnessing the power of your network. Schedule Interviews Strategically Since you can’t suddenly have doctors’ appointments every morning one week without raising suspicion, get creative with scheduling interviews. Try to schedule your interviews before or after work or during lunchtime. If your interviewer isn’t flexible with scheduling, use vacation or personal days for interviews. 4. Be Wary Of Your Wardrobe Do you work in a casual office? Be very wary of how you dress on days you have an interview.  Interview dress is crucial to landing a job, but you can’t wear polo shirts and khakis every day of the week, then suddenly don a tailored suit and tie on a Friday. To avoid suspicion, quick changes in public bathrooms (or your home, if it’s close enough) may be in order. 5. Your Boss May See Notice As A Threat It may seem ideal to give your boss a “heads up” that you’re pursuing new ventures, especially if he or she knows there isn’t opportunity for you to grow within the company. But be very careful: Some employers may see your friendly “heads up” as a threat for salary or benefits negotiating power. Your employer may begin to see you as a temporary employee and remove you from important projects or, worse, immediately begin the search for your replacement. 6. Use Former Employers As References As much as you may like your current boss, it should be obvious to use former employers to be as references in your job search. Prospective employers will understand that you want to keep your job search confidential. (The exception is if your company is actively downsizing, as noted above.) 7. Be Honest With Potential Employers If a potential employer asks if your current employer knows about your job search, be honest and tell him, “No.” Potential employers can easily discover if you’re lying through a reference check, which will certainly remove you from the pool of potential candidates. 8. Don’t Forget About Your Current Job Just because you believe the relationship you have with your current company is over doesn’t mean your boss does. Within your work hours, stay focused on your current responsibilities. You owe it to your employer to remain a productive employee for the time you have left. (This includes time after you’ve submitted your letter of resignation.) 9. You Don’t Have The Job Yet It’s natural to feel optimistic about a new position after a stellar interview (or two or three), but remember, that position isn’t yours until it’s offered to you. Don’t submit your  letter of resignation to your boss until you have an offer in writing. Job searching while employed is rough. After all, who wants to do more work after work? But the process has its benefits, too. Employed job searchers are in a better position to negotiate salary and won’t be tempted to accept the first offer that comes along. Changing career can be almost impossible if you aren’t trained or qualified for the career you want to move into. So, you might have to go back to college. But is going back to college really worth it? There are a few things you will need to consider when you come to weigh up your decision. Here are just a few of them. Do You Really Need Extra Qualifications? First of all, you need to consider whether you really do need the extra qualifications. Most of the time, if you already have a bachelors degree, then you won’t need to take another one. For instance, if you have a psychology degree and are currently working as a psychologist, you won’t be required to take an extra degree to get into teaching. Consider Other Ways To Get Qualifications Are you sure that going back to college is really the only way you can get the knowledge or skills needed to change or further your career? There are a few alternatives that you should consider first. For instance, you might be able to take some courses that aren’t quite as intense as college courses. There are lots of night schools up and down the country that have many different courses, ranging from foreign languages to leadership training. It might be worth finding out if one of these will be enough to help move your career on. In some instances, you might be able to do a single module rather than the whole degree course. But it is worth speaking to your employer or a career advisor to see if this will be possible for the career that you want to move into. It’s also necessary to speak to a college to see if they will let you take just a single module or part of a course. Ask Yourself If It Fits In With Your Home Life Another consideration that you needs to make is whether going back to college or school will fit into your home life. This might be a big factor in your decision if you have children and a family to support. After all, you might not be able to give up work to go back to school, especially if you have to pay for all of your tuition fees yourself. It’s not just the money aspect you need to think of when you need to juggle your studies with a busy home life, though. You might not have a whole load of time to fit a whole college course in when you are very busy with your family and other social commitments! However, there might be a way around this. You might be able to find a course that you can study for at home. There are now lots of college institutions that offer courses that can be taken entirely online. There are also some that offer distance learning. However, these kinds of courses often require you to travel for a lecture or seminar once a semester. How To Mix And Mingle Your Way Into A New Job How To Mix And Mingle Your Way Into A New Job The holidays are one of the best times of the year for networking.  So, if youre actively looking for a job, even if you’re thinking about it, December is a great month to get out and meet people. This month, there are even more places to do this. Begin with your office holiday party. It’s tempting to think we know the people that we work with I but if you work in a large corporation, Ive worked in a couple, you probably don’t. There are a lot of people you are friendly with, as in your frequently exchange emails or phone calls, who you’ve never met face-to-face.  Your office party is the perfect opportunity to put faces to names and, maybe, get to know your boss a little better too. An even better place to network is your boyfriend’s, girlfriend’s, or spouse’s holiday party. These events provide the opportunity to meet an entire group of people that you likely dont know. Connections you make outside of your inner circle are more likely to introduce you to others you don’t already know. Another great spot are industry holiday parties. Many national organizations have local chapters which means there’s a lot going on in December.  What makes holiday events even better is that instead of dinner and a speaker, it’s a more relaxed holiday setting designed to help people mix and mingle. Whatever industry you’re in, HR or marketing or financial services, you can probably find a local or semi local event. Go online and explore. Most of us associate networking with business events. But, social events are prime networking venues as well. Maybe your cousin throws a big holiday party every year or you receive an invitation from a friend you havent Seen in five years to come to his New Years Day the potluck brunch. Go. If you’re serious about finding a new job meet as many people as you can. Holiday parties are not the time to run around pushing your business cards at people. While that’s not networking ever, it’s particularly offensive now.  That said, do bring business cards with you. Tuck some in your pocket or purse. But, only give them out to people who ask. When you tell people that you’re looking for a new position don’t ask them to “keep you in mind” if they see anything. Help them help you by giving them something specific. For example, I’m looking for a position as director of marketing with a small to midsized publishing company or I’m looking for a VP of sales position with a technology firm. Providing details will 1) help them remember what you’re looking for and 2) not waste your time with irrelevant leads. December is also a good time to email recruiters you are working with or have worked with in the past. Everyone likes to be thought of during the holidays, to get an email without an ask. And it’s a good way to stay top of mind. The holidays provide many chances to expand your circle. Relaxed, festive settings make it easier to strike up conversations with strangers. Try to attend at least one networking event each week in December. You’ll meet new people, have some fun, and maybe make some new friends.
